Day after record high, testing drops by a lakh | India News – Times of India


NEW DELHI: A day after India registered a record high of 9.18 lakh Covid-19 tests in a single day, testing dropped on Thursday to just over 8 lakh samples, the health ministry said on Friday.
New cases remained high at 68,898, dropping slightly from 69,652 recorded a day ago. This resulted in a spike in daily positivity rate to 8.5%, though it remains close to the cumulative 8.6%, as compared to 7.5% on the previous day.
States like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu continue to register high number of cases. While Maharashtra recorded 14,647 cases and 326 deaths in the last 24 hours, Tamil Nadu reported 5,986 cases and 116 deaths and UP saw 4,824 cases and 95 deaths. Despite the large number of new cases, rising recoveries helped maintain the fatality rate at 1.89% while 983 new deaths on Thursday took the death toll to 54,975.
While 21.5 lakh people have recovered from the infectious disease so far, 62,282 people were discharged from hospitals or home isolation in the last 24 days. Around 33 states and UTs reported recovery rate of more than 50%.
Delhi has the highest recovery rate of 90.10%, followed by Tamil Nadu at 83.50%. States like Gujarat, Telangana, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh have recovery rate of over 70%. Currently, the active caseload stands at 6,92,028, which is 23.82% of the total conformed cases so far.
